How to Choose Baby Gender

Getting Pregnant with a Baby Boy - 2 Great Tips

When planning a family, many couples are curious as to whether or not getting pregnant with a boy is possible. They wonder if they can actually choose the gender of their baby. The reasons for baby gender selection may be many including a personal decision to conceive a baby boy instead of a girl or vice versa,  cultural pressures such as in China where boys are more accepted, or because parents already have a girl and now want a boy to complete their family.

A number of studies have actually shown that as many as 85-90% of parents or couples would actually prefer to choose the sex of their baby if they could do so safely and naturally. So what does this tell us? That there is really no need to feel guilty about wanting a child of a specific gender because it is quite normal to desire this.

So how do you increase the odds of getting pregnant with a boy and is it even possible? Well the answer is that it is possible (though not 100% guaranteed) and there are currently 2 popular methods for trying to choose the sex of your baby.

1)      The first method is known as the Shettles Method which was created by Dr. Landrum Shettles in his well known book called 'How To Choose The Sex Of Your Baby'. The techniques taught in this book have a success rate of approximately 75% according to different studies.

Essentially this method centers around the fact that Y chromosome carrying sperm, which are for conceiving a baby boy,are faster swimmersthan the X chromosome sperm for conceiving a baby girl.  The egg in a woman’s body already has an X chromosome, so the gender of a baby is determined by whichever sperm gets to the egg first. If it is a Y chromosome you will have an XY and therefore get pregnant with a baby boy.

So if your goal is to conceive a baby boy and you want to increase your odds of doing so,  the Shettles method recommends that you have sex as close to ovulation as possible, (approximately 12-24 hours before). This will allow the male sperm which are faster swimmers, but have a shorter life span, to have a much better chance of impregnating the egg.

2. The second method is called sperm sorting.

With advances in science, it is now possible to actually sort the sperm so that the X and Y sperms are separated from each other. The baby gender choice made by the parents then is used to introduce that gender into the female womb during ovulation, or by having a woman’s egg fertilized outside the womb using an IVF procedure.

Sperm sorting has been successful for many couples but it is certainly not a natural gender selection method. Additionally, it is very expensive at over $3,000 for each attempt and on average, couples need 3 to 4 tries. So if you decide to go this route, keep in mind that it could run upwards of close to $12,000. Given this cost, sperm sorting is not realistic for many couples.

The good news is that there are a number of key steps that you can follow in order to significantly increase your odds of getting pregnant with a baby boy. These include how you time intercourse, what you eat to impact your pH level, sexual positions, the importance of how and when you orgasm and much more.
